Don't try to be the person who succeeds. (Instead, work to become that person.)

Musing for:

Don’t try to be the person who succeeds

Some leaders want to advance in their career. They make a pitch that they get good results and their team members and coworkers are happy. They connect with other departments to gain visibility and let other teams know they’re open to bigger opportunities. They tell their boss they want to be the first person in mind when a promotion opportunity comes up.

Other leaders also want to advance. They research the competencies of the position they want and identify areas they can grow. They connect with other departments to find mentors who excel in those skills. They ask their boss for opportunities to develop. They practice. They don’t always succeed, but they do improve. They work to become the person who will be first in mind when a promotion opportunity comes up.

When the next opportunity comes up, which group do you think will get the opportunity?
