In formal status updates, retrospectives, or after-action reviews, your team members will almost never report feeling fear or experiencing unspoken conflict. But those triggers, along with the ambiguity that’s often part of the same cycle, are often early warnings for a failing team.
As a manger, you may think the team looks healthy — the metrics look good. But something just feels … off.
Here are some signs of three silent team health killers that most managers miss.
1️⃣ Fear. The sign is what people won’t say. They’re eager to agree, hesitant to challenge, and they won’t “manage up” to give you feedback. You ask about concerns and get silence. This kills team health because problems remain hidden until they’re almost unsolvable.
2️⃣ Ambiguity. This sign is what people don’t understand. You see frequent rework, slow decisions, and people solving different problems because they have a different idea of what success looks like. And fear keeps them from pointing out their misalignment. But teams cannot execute well on unclear expectations.
3️⃣ Unspoken conflict. This sign is what people won’t resolve. Meetings are overly polite with artificial harmony, but verbal assent doesn’t translate to active execution. Instead, you face side conversations and passive resistance, where team members talk about people they disagree with instead of talking to them.
Any one of these three silent killers can end up breeding or reinforcing either or both of the other two.
But you often don’t need an elaborate, expensive assessment to help you find and fix these team health killers. Sometimes a single conversation can be the turning point for you and your team.
