Confidence is a result, not a prerequisite. (There's power in saying, "This might not work.")

Musing for:

Confidence is a result, not a prerequisite

People often come to a coaching session looking for a thinking partner to help them as they make a decision. Often, they want to come away with new insight, new ideas, new options. Other times, they’re hoping that our conversation will help them find the confidence they need to take action on a decision they already want to make.

But confidence rarely comes from a conversation. Instead, confidence is usually a result of taking action.

It’s tempting to think that you’ll be able to act after you find something to give you confidence that you’re guaranteed to succeed. But that’s not how confidence generally works.

Many times, you’ll need to take action while recognizing, “This might not work.”

Willingness to do something that doesn’t work – and then learn from the results – is what gives you the experience that results in confidence. Not necessarily confidence that your next attempt will succeed, but confidence that you will continue to survive and learn from your attempts until you can eventually succeed.

Next time you’re facing a decision and you think you want confidence first, look instead for courage. Find the courage to embrace the learning that comes from trying something that doesn’t work.
