You have a vision for where you want your career to go. But you look at people who currently hold the position you want, and you think to yourself, “That’s just not me.”
And maybe it’s not … yet.
One of the complaints I have about many assessments that result in a number, a string of letters, or a catchy archetype name is that they tend to reinforce a fixed idea of who you are. And when you feel like your responsibilities expect something that doesn’t fit your profile, the path to progress may seem blocked.
When you have plenty of resources available, you may opt to delegate some of your responsibilities to other people so you can focus on the areas where you’re strong. But if you’re not in a position to delegate, and you must shoulder your own burden, then even the first step toward the goal may feel insurmountable.
That feeling reminds me of a post from a friend of mine, Michael Cassidy. He shared strategies for going from 0 to 1, when you don’t have the strength to perform even one pullup. (You can find that post here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/michaelcassidy88_activeintech-fitness-healthandwellness-activity-7059859147659378688-78gE) A trick is to find something that activates the same area in a way that’s less demanding than the full exercise.
In your personal growth, the challenge may not be physical like Michael’s pullups are. Maybe you’re trying to build assertiveness or kindness, self-discipline or adaptability. What is the tiniest action you could take that would force you to exercise that trait that you want to build?
