Wherever you go, there you are.
— Captain Obvious?
It sounds like something Captain Obvious would say.
But one of the cool things about language is that by changing our inflection, we can find new meaning from the same sentence. For formal or informal leaders who are looking for personal growth, I’d like to propose two different ways to read and interpret this sentence.
Wherever you go, THERE you are.
Whether you’re talking with a family member, sitting in a business meeting, or troubleshooting a system, don’t dilute your attention with multi-tasking. If you need to be somewhere else, then be somewhere else. Then, fully engage your mind and attention wherever you are.
Wherever you go, there YOU are.”
When your environment is frustrating, nobody understands you, you’re surrounded by idiots… It’s tempting to want to escape, to switch teams, to change jobs. But many people walk away from one miserable situation only to find that the next opportunity wasn’t any better. They didn’t realize it, but they brought their own misery with them.
If living into either of those two perspectives seems challenging for you, or if you see yet another way to interpret this self-evident statement, I’d love to talk. Visit https://stevedwire.com/connect to schedule a complimentary conversation.
